Good Morning! County, 1509 S. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem. Our guest speaker is Laurie Coker. Ms. Cocker will speak on Friday morning about her plan to establish a Social Center run by and for individuals with a mental illness. NOTE: Ms. Coker’s presentation will take place in our UPSTAIRS meeting room. For more information, contact The Mental Health Association in Forsyth County at 768-3880. self-support organization centered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her interests in improving services for citizens with mental health problems, developmental disabilities, and addiction result from her own personal experiences with these, her family experiences, and her past work as a psychiatric nurse. She served on the North Carolina Commission for Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services for six years and on the NAMI North Carolina Board of Directors. Laurie has interacted with leadership of other statewide consumer organizations, learning from them how to promote a “customer”-centered service system which supports opportunity, well-being, and meaningful living for the citizens it serves. She recently participated on an advisory committee at the National Mental Health Consumer’s Self Help Clearing House and has been selected by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) to participate in an intensive leadership institute for 2010. of life for persons affected by mental illness through advocacy, education and support services. Liz Arnold, Ph.D., a licensed clinical social worker and psychologist with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is the Association’s Board President.
